After aging as the original Maker's Mark recipe, 5 #4 CHAR french oak barrel staves are dropped into the barrel, then allowed to sit in the barrel for an additional 3-6 months. This enhances the bourbon with extra oak and vanilla flavor without any bitterness on the back end.
